Coach Prime is not primarily responsible for changing the game alone🏈 That responsibility is on each one of US👨🏿🏫
Over the past few days, following the information being made public regarding an opportunity being extended by, The University of Colorado, to the former head coach of Jackson State University, Deon Sanders, there has been an enormous amount of backlash as a result of the breaking news. The University of Colorado would soon successfully secure and hire the services of the legendary American sports Icon as the Head Coach of The Colorado Buffaloes football team on December 3, 2022. Understandably, this groundbreaking hire was not very well received by some supporters, fans, and media outlets as well. Much of the outrage expressed by those who are in disbelief as a result of the coaching move, has unfairly targeted Coach Deon Sanders while attempting to make him the face of a broken system and the blame for the problems facing black college athletics in America today. Black students that have made the decision to ignore offers from Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), while accepting substandard offers from major universities. I agree that this has been a major thorn in the sides of smaller and economically challenged HBCUs, and one that has been a factor that HBCUs have had to deal with since the integration of schools in the 1960s. However, it is irrational for a portion of society to believe that a man is not worthy of making a decision to move on after effectively investing years in the youth and paying his dues. Why shouldn’t he be granted an opportunity, while being able to take full advantage of it without resentment?
While many people who are currently upset about the move by coach Sanders, are finding reasons to be unsupportive of the new hire, we must realize that Deon Sanders had already given so so much to our youth even before being named the head coach of Jackson State University, a little over 3 years ago.
Deon Sanders has also paid his dues in the coaching ranks by being an integral part of a coaching staff that won championships while coaching in high school. His final year at Jackson State University produced an undefeated season.
Newly hired coach, Deon “Prime Time” Sanders, hopes to now take his winning Pedigree and coaching appeal to Boulder, Colorado for a much larger stage and a greater cause.
Thinking that coach Sanders is only setting a bad example for our youth by leaving a much smaller HBCU school and heading for the Rockies would be absurd.
We would be ignoring the individual accountability that many of us share a part in, and that is the neglect of effectively investing in our children before they reach the collegiate level. We have unconsciously disregarded and downplayed our role in assuring that children of color are receiving quality education while attending updated facilities at their individual learning institutions.
By investing in our children’s future at an early age, makes the youth of color less prone to be captivated by the glamour of the financially fortunate schools later on in their careers. We must collectively build by doing some of the same things that Deon Sanders has miraculously done while many weren’t paying attention.
Things such as building quality schools in areas of poverty, devoting countless hours of our time to the youth, and also making education a priority for children of color, in order to produce promise.
