Let’s Get TO IT!
In the movie LIFE, Ray Gibson (Eddie Murphy) was gambling at a bar and after a series of bad luck, he then placed his Daddy’s pocket watch onto the table because he had run out of money. Ray placed it all on the table and as the story goes, he lost his remaining money and also his most prized pocket watch to a hustler named Winston Hancock. It wasn’t until after Mr. Hancock had collected his winnings and gotten up from the gambling table and exited the bar, that Ray Gibson had discovered that he had been cheated by Mr. Winston.
It was only after exiting the bar for the evening that Ray Gibson and Claude Banks (Martin Lawrence) were able to catch up with Winston Hancock. By this time Winston had been shot, beaten, and taking his final breaths. Winston had already been harassed, interrogated, and fatally assaulted by a militia of men who represented the towns Sheriff. These same men that were responsible for his fatal wounds and his death, also left Winston Hancock barely hanging onto life. Unfortunately Gibson and Banks were in a similar position as many black man still find themselves in today. They were just being Black and a victim of being at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Still, this should never cost you your LIFE.
Let’s take a look at a much larger point. It was Only because Ray Gibson identified Winston Hancock as “Drunk a** Winston” that has caused America to forget that a Drunk man was Not who Winston Handcock was. He was a Hustler, con man, and a opportunist but we have No evidence of Winston being a drunk. Winston was wrong for his actions but is also overlooked for the fact that HE (Winston Handcock) died protecting himself from a system that had already predetermined his fate. We only refer to Winston as a drunk because that’s how the story goes and we weren’t there; so therefore we are left with one mans word or his account of the story. Now ask yourself, was Winston really a Drunken man? The more important question is how many times have we allowed the words of others to distract or rob individuals of their true identity (good or bad) based upon one mans narrative alone? When we examine the story of Winston Hancock, then we begin to understand how it is possible for a man to be stripped of his identity and given a phony persona based on another mans motives. “We must begin to lead and leave our own traces, tracks, footprints, and paths so that we are no longer depending on another man to tell our story, but we rely only on the people, places, and our contributions to society that we have touched; to mark, brand, and identify all things in which we have advanced and enhanced along the way.” —-The M.O.C.H.A.
